Just got back from the Jordan Classic
« Thread Started on Apr 21, 2007, 11:38pm »

I just got back from a wonderful night at MSG. I was sitting approximately 15 rows behind Jai Lucas. Throughout the game i was chanting "HEY JAI" no response from him. After the game had ended i moved a few rows ahead and screamed "HEY JAI" and he looked up and saw a young 17 year old kid , wearing a UK hat and a UK sweatshirt waving his arms in the air. He gave me a head nod and a smile that you could fall in love with. I was not contempt though. A few minutes later, Jai had came out to talk to people. I went underneath one of the baskets. I screamed yet again " HEY JAI" and signaled for him to come over, he smiled and quickly finished his convo and came to me. I quickly got out a pen and took my hat off for him to sign. ( don't know if i just committed a violation) then he gave me a wave goodbye.

Lucas looked like a great PG, despite the game being more like a "pickup game" he looked great. He was able to find open players. hit his free throws, and had a nice mid range shot.

Patterson meanwhile , did not seem to do anything in the first half. I only noticed him because i had my eyes on him the whole time, but a casual fan would not have noticed anything "special" about him. the 2nd half though , he was a real defensive presence. He was all over the place defensively.

all in all it was a fun night , and one that i was defiantly remember. on the side note , there was another UK fan in the stands holding up a sign during every commercial break which said
JAI+ PAT COME TO UK!!!. As Patterson was leaving the floor at the end of the game , the fan screamed WE NEED YOU PATTERSON!!.

Nice recap. Seems like we still have a good chance with Jai. I don't see him filling a MUST NEED position so he's the lesser of my two concerns. However, if Jai does come here then that increases our needs with PP. So...wouldn't mind seeing either or both in blue and white as most fans would agree. Just END IT NOW!!!

I'm not sure myself. If so, I'm sure Sandy Bell will let us know. We had a long discussion here years ago but I honestly cannot remember it all.

The thread is pinned on the recruiting board though.

I would browse it this morning but I must go to work. :(

Thx for the recap. It sounded like you guys had a blast. :)

From Sandy Bell's comments on our board, getting Jai's autograph would indeed qualify as a violation. Her comments about "booster contact" were:

Quote:
it is not permissible to go up to a recruit after a game and congratulate him on the game or on a commitment. The rule states no contact at all. Also, a verbal commitment does not change anything as far as the NCAA is concerned. All the rules apply exactly the same as they did prior to the commitment because recruitment does not cease with a commitment. Actually, boosters are prohibited from contacting a prospect until they cease to be a prospect which is when they show up on our campus to start classes for the fall term. So, it is also not permissible to have any contact with those who signed in the fall. It is not possible to ask a recruit for an autograph because, once again, that qualifies as a contact. It is just really important to leave the recruiting to the coaches. Once they become an enrolled student-athlete, you can talk to them, ask for autographs, etc. Having a personal conversation with a young man is very different from a crowd chanting during an athletics event. The NCAA defines contact as "face-to-face", therefore, I don't think the Midnight Madness chant would qualify. We are not permitted to instigate or encourage those chants or signs, but they are not considered to be an NCAA violation. I know many of you do not agree with these rules but most of them are in place to attempt to level the playing field in recruiting.

We don't agree with the NCAA and many of their rules and some, like getting a freaking autograph (especially if you say NOTHING about what team you'd like to see them sign with) are absolutely absurd. However, I think we should do everything in our power to keep all recruiting activities squeaky-clean so NOBODY, NOWHERE, NO HOW ever accuses UK of cheating again!
