WOW!!!!!! I just never believed that an ordinary fan like myself(not some over-weight cigar-smoking, wealthy booster) could get my beloved CATS in trouble. So Thanks for the clarification on the rules. ED

Thank you Sandy for the info and you have helped me alot. I have one more question. I have heard on this board that Josh Smith a highly sought after recruit is signing alot of autographs after games. He has committed to IU. Based on what has been said this could get Josh Smith and IU in alot of trouble. So my question is for those UK prospects like Joe Crawford who lives in Michigan is he aware of the consequences of talking and sign autographs and is it fare for us as UK fans if this does happen because we would have no control over it?

I think we could all agree that UK has the most loyal, and probably the hughest Fan base. so if they (NCAA) would try to to burn the university over its fans talking with recruits, UK takes them to court and it gets thrown out because no way can UK or any other control that. NOWAY!!!!!ED

Sorry if it has taken a while to get your question answered. I have been working on a waiver trying to get a young man eligible in another sport. The answers to your questions are: it is not permissible to go up to a recruit after a game and congratulate him on the game or on a commitment. The rule states no contact at all. Also, a verbal commitment does not change anything as far as the NCAA is concerned. All the rules apply exactly the same as they did prior to the commitment because recruitment does not cease with a commitment. Actually, boosters are prohibited from contacting a prospect until they cease to be a prospect which is when they show up on our campus to start classes for the fall term. So, it is also not permissible to have any contact with those who signed in the fall. It is not possible to ask a recruit for an autograph because, once again, that qualifies as a contact. It is just really important to leave the recruiting to the coaches. Once they become an enrolled student-athlete, you can talk to them, ask for autographs, etc. Having a personal conversation with a young man is very different from a crowd chanting during an athletics event. The NCAA defines contact as "face-to-face", therefore, I don't think the Midnight Madness chant would qualify. We are not permitted to instigate or encourage those chants or signs, but they are not considered to be an NCAA violation. I know many of you do not agree with these rules but most of them are in place to attempt to level the playing field in recruiting. UK has many more supporters and boosters across the country than a lot of other schools so it would be a great advantage in the recruiting process if ALL of those people could participate in recruiting someone to that school. (It would also probably drive the young person crazy !) The NCAA is a membership organization and UK is one of those members. The rules are an effort to make the recruiting process as fair as possible for all members not just us. There are exceptions for the recruit's legitimate family members. The rules are not meant to interfere with those relationships they are only meant to control interaction that would exist only because the young person is an athlete. Hope this covers most of what you asked. Again we greatly appreciate the willingness of everyone on this board to honor these restrictions whether you agree with them or not. Believe me, a lot of our coaches also do not agree with a lot of the rules they have to follow but they know they have to do that to protect the young men and women we recruit. Thanks to all of you! Sandy Bell Again, we appreciate your response Sandy.

The amazing thing to me is .. why don't the highschool coaches " STEVE SMITH" who undoubtedly seen my son and myself in our UK attire allow him to speak to us as he stood 10 feet away? I seen about 30 players from both teams and also a WAKE FOREST recruit who was at the game talking to folk all over. If I new all of this would turn into this then I would have stayed hush... yeah right. Hey he did say he was going to be a MAA.. and he was right.. woohoooo GO RONDO and JOE

BIGBLUEguru - No one is saying that you are a bad person because you talked to this young man. I read your post and you sound like a wonderful family man. You were simply uninformed about this particular rule and now you are informed. I would have like for you to say that, had you known, you wouldn't have done this rather than "If I had to do it all over again then I would without a doubt do it the same way". That makes all our efforts at rules education a little frustrating. I think what everybody needs to recognize here is that these recruits are not UK players yet. When they become UK players, you can get your autographs and have your conversations. I travel with this team everywhere they go and we have fans who come up to them at every stop to do just exactly that and it is wonderful. But there is a difference between them and a high school kid who is still being recruited. That being said, I think I am done for the day and am going to head home. I hope all of you who are going to the game tonight enjoy it and that our recruit outplays everyone else's. Thanks again, Sandy

One last thing, it is not the high school coach's job to control the activities of any college's boosters. It is the institution's job and that is what we are trying to do.

After hearing this I really appreciate all your advice. After hearing this, if to do all over again, I would do the SAME THING. Could you please tell me maybe tomorrow the last recruit for us or any BIG name school that lost out because of this rule? I am sure that this happens all over the world. I am not being a smart ellic or anything else just curious. Maybe we should start a BOOSTER club since we are all BOOSTERS..!!! Hey, don't BOOSTERS get special treatment at games and UK functions? Sorry all for how all this sounded but I am VERY aggitated.

i am done with the special treatment.......thats something that all us on here should look into .......i mean steaks would be a nice addition to uk games.....or simply just a seat next to ashley judd (i call dibbs).......either way i see your frustration, i honestly i do not think anyone has ever lost a recruit due to talking to a fan as harmless as this situation is......it would be pretty petty, either way i personally know that i wont do it for the simple fact of just in case.

I don't think I would do that. This is a serious issue or else Sandy wouldn't be here wasting her time.

You know something, this is truly pathetic! TELL ME ONE COLLEGE THAT HAS LOST A RECRUIT B/C A FAN GOT HIS SON AN AUTOGRAPH FOR HIM!!!!!!!! Sandi, I appreciate your concern and I know it's your job, but are you kiddin' me? If I get to see Rondo play, I will get an autograph. This sickens me and I know that I'm going to receive hate posts from other members, so I'm leaving this message board. It's been nice fella's and gals, but I'm not going to be told that I can't get an autograph from anyone! You guys know the reason why you've never heard of this? It's b/c Rondo won't be barred from coming to UK for giving an autograph. And no one else has for that matter. It's been a real joy for me to post with you guys and share knowledge and opinions, but I must leave. Spam, thank you so much for the Big Blue Madness tickets you gave me. I really appreciate it and won't forget it bro'. God bless, I'm out.
