Stoops is pleased with the day-to-day progression of the team. They are beginning to build some confidence in the things they do while becoming more efficient. A major emphasis today was on 3rd-down situations, leaving Stoops pleased with the results. “There is much more good football coming from both sides.”
- Mornings may not be so rough for the players in the fall. Today Stoops was asked once again, ‘why always indoors?’ (There has been only one practice that media has attended that has been outdoors) Stoops doesn’t like starting the day off in frost and plans on having afternoon practices in the fall. “The benefits would be a little more rest for these players. I think we can all act like they’re going to go to bed at 9 or 10 o’clock like we need them to, but to get them up very early in the morning all season long on that grind, when you’re going every single day for a whole season, I don’t know how much sleep they’re getting.” Coming from a fellow college student, afternoon practice sounds SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better.
- Coach Stoops has now been officially on the job for more than 4 months. He hasn’t had too many on-the-field eye-openers, rather the surprises are coming from the little things that are asked of him as the Head Coach. “I guess what keeps you on your toes is just the day-to-day details of everything in the program. Whether it’s how we’re going to handle the spring game, how we’re going to walk over to the spring game, where we’re going to dress. All those things are the things that are probably most uncomfortable for me and the things that are new to me.”
- Defensive Coordinator D.J. Eliot is pleased with the fundamental progress of the team thus far. The base is in place, but there are still plenty of things to work on; “In defensive football, you have what you have to do, and then you have what you want them to do. They understand what they HAVE to do, but they but they don’t necessarily know everything that we WANT them to do.” He also commended Trevaughn Paschal’s progression during the first few weeks of the Spring season, impressing the coaches while working both Defensive End and Outside Linebacker.
- There has been tough competition for the open DT spot, left after Donte Rumph underwent shoulder surgery last week. Tristian Johnson has played well, with Mike Douglas’ fast hands giving him a run for his money.
- If you can’t tell by now, Jimmy Brumbaugh is by far my favorite assistant on staff. Maybe I’m a biased old defensive lineman, but today he gave a great quote that can apply to how Spring is working for players at all positions. “The more that you add to the concepts and what you do, it’s harder for guys at times. But the thing of it is, you throw it all up on the wall; what slides down, you scoop it back up and throw it back against the wall and they’ll eventually get it. We take the time and we develop the techniques that they’re going to have within the scheme.”
