As we have arrived at Final Four weekend, the BBN is coming to terms with not being a participant this year. However, as so frequently occurs in life, we found it was darkest just before dawn -- our new Big Blue dawn, that is. Watching a McDonald's All-American game this week in which there was not one second where a UK recruit was NOT on the floor, the BBN caught a brief glimpse into our future, one that it so bright, you are going to need (Big Blue) shades. Let's take a look at the incoming class (which could still gain another huge victory by signing Wiggins): rankings used are those from scout.com
Aaron Harrison - 6'5" - SG - ranked #3 - great shooter and part of the "best package deal in college basketball" along with his twin...
Andrew Harrison - 6'5" - PG - ranked #2 - talented point guard with the advantage of height at his position
Marcus Lee - 6'9" - PF - ranked #37 - loves playing defense and blocking shots, as well as being a great passer
Julius Randle - 6'8" - SF - ranked #4 - strong post up player and strong defender
James Young - 6'6" - G/F - ranked #8 - great athleticism and a scorer...driving or perimeter
Dakari Johnson - 6'10" - PF - ranked #18 - great hands and great rebounder. Athleticism noted as "area of improvement" for him.
Impressive crop of talent to be sure, but add to that those we know are staying for another season in the Blue:
Kyle Wiltjer
Alex Poythress
Willie Cauley Stein
Jarod Polson
(and while the hope may be slim, Nerlens Noel has still not left us!)
To a man, all the new recruits have already talked about fighting hard for playing time, which should mean they will be working hard in practice, following the coach's instructions and working to be good teammates.
As special as the 2011-12 Cats were, the 2013-14 edition is already showing signs of being even more special. Time will tell. But for now, I think I will just put on my Big Blue Shades and enjoy what is to come!
In the meantime, Maniacs, let us know how you would use all these versatile players and in which combinations. Do we start all freshmen or do we add a couple of upperclassmen for the experience factor? Speculate with and without Wiggins and/or Noel. We have plenty of time to discuss all the options!
