For everyone on this board who thinks that there should be an asterick next to Tubby's name for winning the 1998 championship with UK. I have a challenge for you.
Name one team in the last 20 years with less talent that won an NCAA championship.
I will help you out with the UK players from that team in the NBA.
1998 Nazr Mohammed 29th pick first round
1999 Scott Padgett 20 pick first round
2000 Jamal Magliore (This shouldn't count cause he didn't even play but here you go Tubby haters) 17th pick first round.

No Asterick needed. I hear no one wanting an asterick next to Roy Williams so none is needed for Tubby either. We can complain/praise all we want but the fact is: .... Tubby Smith is a national champion.

HMMMMM, in eight years Tubby has one first round draft choice yet he was left with 3. I agree Tubby coached the team and should get the credit but for you to say that is the least talent on a team in 20 years what does that say about the talent level at UK in the Tubby era. IF it took 3 first round picks on one team to win it all, how in Hades is Tubs gonna win with one first round pick in 8 years? Riddle me that, CH! ;D ;D ;D

Read below; Mohammed, Magliore, and Padgett were all brought here by the Pee not Tubby. Tubby may have had something to do with theiir development but he did not bring them here, Only 1 player recruited by Tubby has been a first rounder at UK-Tay Prince. Go back to GA and Tulsa days and I think that first round list can be extended by Jumaine Jones. 2 first round picks in 14 years of coaching. Nobody else. I think it says something about Tubby's talent evaluation skills wouldn't you?

You have a very valid point there kj to say the least.
That being said, I don't think an asterisk is appropriate. One coach wanted to be here, the other did not. Simply as than to me.
Besides, along with everyone else, I remember watching that Championship run. They came back, from way behind, against Duke, Stanford and someone else I don't remember right now. But Tubby keep them focused, and they won. That's it, they won.

Two different situations. 1. No asterisk necessary or valid 2. What has Tubby done since then in recruiting top players and/or developing them? To me, we already have the 1998 Championship Trophy and Tubby has the ring to prove it. However, I am concerned with where Tubby has taken the Program the last 7 years, where it is now and where it is going. Tubby IS NOT the correct Coach/Leader going forward.

Tubby actually was left with four first round picks, uncluding one all-state and another kid taken in the top 17.
As KJ said, Tubby has had one player taken in the first round, and none in the top 20 of any draft that he recruited.
Tubby managed that team very well but it's clear he cannot get it done again.

Man, you really are stretching the facts. 1st and 2nd round picks by year: 05 - zero 04 - zero 03 - zero in 1st round, 1 in 2nd round 02 - 1 in 1st round 01 - zero (Bradley also taken) 00 - 1, Pitino recruit 99 - 1, Pitino recruit 98 - 1, Pitino recruit. Tubby has said the team with the most NBA talent usually wins it all any yet he cannot either recruit or develop 1st round material.
