Smith leaves Kentucky to rebuild Minnesota. The Times sees this parting Tubby Smith's way, and so does Jim Boeheim: I don't think Boeheim has it quite right here, but he is not completely wrong either. I believe the era where UK can dominate the SEC is long gone, and that the culture surrounding UK is indeed unrealistic. The Rupp part is silly. Dave Telep's take: I think this is half-right also. Too many times, Smith found himself behind the eight-ball in recruiting, and just signed guys he figured he could develop. It didn't work out for him in the long run.

What would a coach from Syracuse know about the fan base in Kentucky?

What would a coach from Syracuse know about the fan base in Kentucky? I don't know. I suppose you could ask him. But he certainly knows his own fan base, and can do a comparison. Bad behavior is pretty much the same everywhere in the United States - doesn't require a lot of inside information, it sort of speaks for itself.

Jim Boeheim is still ticked off about getting snubbed...
Here is the reality of UK basketball, WE SIMPLY WANT A TEAM THAT IS ABLE TO COMPETE FOR
A NATIONAL TITLE - WE KNOW WE CAN'T WIN EVERY YEAR, BUT WE WANT TO BE EXCITED THAT
IT IS A POSSIBILITY.

When you mention college basketball to just about anyone, Kentucky comes to mind. That is not just here, but nation wide. The perception is that Kentucky is one of the greatest all time college teams. That notion is not based on media coverage, but almost 70 years of excellent performance. Every coach out there knows what Kentucky basketball is about. If you cant recruit and compete, you will be gone. You know that before you sign the contract. For the media to play coy and act surprised is just another ploy to make Tubby a coaching Martyr. If your ego needs to be filled, come and coach and be successful. Just ask Rick. Hell, they were stealing grass from his yard. Kentucky people have grown up with a winning team that competes on a national level. The people, for the most part, are very passionate and care a great deal about how the team performs. This is what happens when you grow up with a winning team. You EXPECT a certain level of performance. Kinda like walking outside and realizing that there is no air. It has not changed in the 42 years Ive been alive, and it wont change long after Im dead. Ky fans expect the team to win. We are not Minnesota.

I did not know RUPP coached in the 90's.... ;D
That was not that long ago. AND UNC, Kansas, are still kicking. Florida went to a FF in 94 and 2000 and won it last year. Mich. St. has made 4 FF's and a title since 98.
Jim even got one. So what was his point..... UK should not be where it is at. Through it all UK Rupp through Pitino the winning % avg was 77%. It is not just in the RUPP era.

What UK fan want may be unrealistic yes. What the UK fans expect is not going to change. If UK fans could live with losing 10 games a year and watch a team made up of mostly role players then Tubby Smith would still be here. Another question and this is not a knock on Tubby. If he couldnt recruit enough quality players to win but 1 national championship at KY. How does he expect to recruit champion caliber players up North? Can someone PLEASE help me with that. People who dont live in KY or who havnt spent any time here during basketball season dont have a clue about how much the people in KY love this team. A final note to all perspective coaches...BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR......If you are unaware or unwilling to except the high level of excellence at KENTUCKY. If you come to KY expecting to be handed the the key to the CADILLAC of collage basketball expect some pressure and heat . If this is not for throw the keys on the dashboard for the next driver. Take a dogsled ride up north. You'll find Tubby Smith in a gopher hole. He may find a spot for you on his coaching staff. He couldnt take the pressure at UK anymore either...........
