It is interesting that while the number of 3 pointers attempted have gone up the number of makes have gone down. And ft % is pretty much the same as 20 years ago.

I'm surprised with the huge decrease of FG attempts from 1970 to 1980, but FG% within those 10 years increased! 1978 looked like a pretty good year for FG attempts vs. FG%.

The FGA drop from 1970 to 1980 is an interesting one. The drop is not discontinuous, so it's probably not due to a rule change. Besides the only rule change I know of that might impact FGA was outlawing the dunk in '68 (reinstated in '77?). The 45sec shot clock didn't come along until '86. The drop is rather smooth, sort of like an spread of a playing style. It does start after a few of the UCLA championships, and continues throughout that remarkable run that the Bruins had. So, maybe, just a guess - teams were beginning to adopt parts of the UCLA zone defense - the slow parts.
