Ya know guys, I have been giving this Hawkins situation some thought. It would sure be bad if he missed the fall semester next year, but we could overcome it and he would be needed for the conference run. But I digress...
The question, What would be the problems with Hawkins redshirting?
Here is how I see it, and obviously if you want to be successful in basketball you must be looking constantly at the future without losing sight of the present. It would certainly hurt our team for next year to have to play without Hawkins at the point. We would still be a good team, but I think Hawkins is poised for a breakout year. But even deeper than that, if Hawkins redshirt next year then he would have two years of eligibility remaining after that. Sort of an extra year that he would be here. That would hurt us with recruiting. We have basically signed Stockton to be a career backup point with a chance at starting during his junior year. The 2004 class we sign will feature a highly rated point guard if Hawkins graduates on time. We have had problems signing great points in the last few years and a lot of that problem might have been that they were afraid of nepotism. They felt that they would not have a chance to start as freshmen. 2004 is a very deep and talented class for points and if Hawkins graduates on time then a prime selling point for us is that they will only have 5'9" backup point Stockton to contend with for playing time. Any top point worth his jock will jump at that opportunity and possibly win the starting job. IF Hawkins redshirt then he will still be there when that incoming 2004 class arrives and he will be a fifth year senior guaranteed to start. A top flight point guard might shy away from Kentucky within that scenario because he will realize that he has no chance to start. And we dearly want to sign one of those top point guards in 2004. So it is important that Hawkins does not redshirt
