The nearly 50 applicants soon narrowed to 10. A decision made by the end of July. That's the timetable for hiring a new athletics director, University of Kentucky president Lee Todd told the school's Athletics Association Board of Directors yesterday. Board members received a four-page outline of what Todd will look for in hiring a new A.D. The outline emphasized practical experience. "The role of the next A.D. is not one of maintenance, but rather one of providing creative and astute leadership," the outline said. A candidate outside the realm of college athletics faces "a steep learning curve," the outline said. However, Todd downplayed the necessity of the new athletics director having UK ties. "I'm not putting the requirement that they have ties to UK," he said. "I like passion. I have passion that burns in my stomach for this job I have because I'm a Kentuckian. "But I want somebody to run this department in a very, very professional manner. It's a business. It's a big business. I think it can be a bigger business."

Any ideas on who the 10 candidates are or who you all would like to see take the position?

Hmmmmmmm...UK's next AD will be decided by Sam Bowie and Dermonti Dawson :stupid: OK, they are just "part" of the advisory panel.

Todd will make the final decision, but it sounds like his decision will be influenced greatly by this panel.
Noting that he decided to hire the consultant firm of Carr Sports Associates Inc., Todd said he would make the decision on the new A.D. An advisory panel, which includes former UK athletes Dermontti Dawson and Sam Bowie, will serve as a sounding board.
"I'd like to get all the input I can get," Todd said.

Man this is taking forever. Is any one else starting to get impatient like myself? But it is good to know that the list is at 10. Loved how he talked about PASSION for the UK program. Hope Tubby does the same. Now in reality can Tubby hire anyone before there is an AD?ED

Now in reality can Tubby hire anyone before there is an AD?ED Good question. I am not sure, myself. I think one reason for the wait on S&C coach is that the present one's contract does not run out till the end of this month. As long as he does not need to wait on a new AD, I would expect Tubby to fill that spot soon afterward. SS1, I see nothing wrong in getting as much advice as he may need. He stated that ties to UK was not even a priority for him so I doubt any good ol' boys would be looked at. I like the idea of having some former athletes involed in the search.

I actually believe that the decision should be made by more than one person. The advisory panel is the right way to do it imo. The idea of former athletes on the panel kind of concerns me though. This should be a business decision and nothing personal should be made of it. Former athletes make alot of "friends" during and after their collegiate careers. Most of these "friends" are usually within the organization. If Joe B. Hall becomes our next AD at Kentucky then all eyes will be on Sam Bowie!! :brow:

What I like is that Todd has specified he wants someone with prior experience as an AD and that he could care less if they have had ties with UK. He has stated that it is a business and that is why he wants someone with prior experience. At the same time, since it is the Atheletic Director, I see no problem with having some former athletes on the advisory council. Let's just hope that they get the best person they can.

You know, I'm as impatient as anyone here.. But I'm really glad Dr. Todd is taking his time.. I'd much rather have him take some time and get the right person for the job, than for him to rush it and make a mistake..
We've had enough mistakes IMO..
Am I the only one who's thinking that an assistant coach won't be announced till the new AD is in place?

Am I the only one who's thinking that an assistant coach won't be announced till the new AD is in place? I was of that opinion myself MissKitty, but then I read where Tubby was wanting to have his assistant in place by the end of this month. Hard to tell at this point, but I do agree that, even though I'm impatient, I am happy that time and great thought seems to be going into this decision.

I am glad that they are taking their time choosing the AD but I am getting impatient too..I want them to get him in place so that Tubby can hire his Assistant. Hopefully they will have everything in place soon.
