Computer-animated "Shrek 2" debuted to a record $11.8 million at domestic box offices on Wednesday, marking the best performance by an animated film opening at midweek, its backers at the DreamWorks film studio said on Thursday. "Shrek 2," in which the big, green ogre Shrek and his sidekick Donkey send up Hollywood and our culture's obsession with body image, is the follow-up to the hugely successful 2001 Oscar-winning film "Shrek." The first film raked in $267 million at North American box offices and a total of around $455 million worldwide. Privately held DreamWorks has high hopes the sequel, which has earned solid reviews, can perform at least as well.

I am always so behind the times. I didn't even watch the original Shrek all the way through until a couple of months ago. Guess I'll probably get around to the sequel in about a year.
