BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Another one of the nation's top girls basketball players has given her word to Kentucky.
Eleia Roddy, a 6-foot-3 post player from Columbus, Ohio, ranked by one service as the No. 93 player in the country, made her oral commitment to UK yesterday.
"Everyone has the dream of being a part of a top-25 program," Roddy said. "I thought if I ever wanted to be on a national championship team, Kentucky was the one on my list that could do it."
Roddy, who is the fifth recruit for new UK coach Mickie DeMoss, said she was excited by the prospect of getting playing time since UK graduates six seniors next season. She also liked the direction of UK's program.
"I have college coaches saying to me, 'Kentucky is going to be going somewhere,' " Roddy said. "When other coaches say it, you should believe it."
UK still has two scholarships available for next season.
Roddy chose Kentucky over Louisville, West Virginia and Dayton.
Her name doesn't always pop up on recruiting radar screens. She moved twice in high school and was overshadowed much of her career by 6-foot-6 Jessica Davenport, who plays for Ohio State.
"She's never been the go-to player, but she's never had to be," said Tom Jenkins, who runs the Ohio Girls Basketball Magazine and scouting service. "It isn't that she's not a great one. She's just been overshadowed by other players' reputations."
She averaged 9.2 points and 6.6 rebounds a game last year for Columbus Independence. But Independence Coach Bill Spencer said "she has what it takes to be a great player."
Spencer said Roddy can run the floor, is a strong rebounder and has a deadly long-range jump shot.
Her speed, strength and leaping ability are her biggest assets, Spencer said.
"Whoever's going to guard her has got to be strong," Spencer said. "She doesn't mind getting hit or giving one out."
Jenkins said Roddy has been the most sought-after post player in the state this season and that she is "extremely athletic. A great jumper and strong. Real strong."
Roddy still needs to develop her offensive game, but she has the raw talent to succeed, Jenkins said. Defense is her specialty.
"Defensively, she'll be able to come into the Southeastern Conference and 'D' it up with any player out there," Jenkins said. "She's that good."

does not the 5/8 rule apply to the womens team?
or would the ncaa be slapped with a GENDER lawsuit if it would apply mens limit to the womens team?
