Senior right fielder Sawyer Carroll has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Carroll batted .667 (14-for-21) with two doubles, a triple, 17 RBI, six walks, while swiping 2-of-2 bags during Kentucky’s 6-0 week. Most astonishing, Carroll has homered in four consecutive games, a feat believed to be a first in the history of the Wildcat program.
In UK’s opening nine games this season, Carroll has led the team with a .600 (18-for-30) average, five doubles, a triple, five homers and 23 RBI. For the year, Carroll has slugged for a 1.333 percentage, drawing a club-high 10 walks, reaching base at a .690 clip.
A year ago, it took Carroll 29 games to launch his first career home run, one of three on the year. After packing on over 20 pounds of muscle during the offseason to a swing that led the SEC in doubles a year ago, Carroll has displayed a power bat that currently leads the league in 8-of-14 offensive categories. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound left-handed hitter leads the league in average (.600), slugging (1.333), on-base percentage (.690), hits (18), RBI (23), home runs (5), total bases (40) and walks (10). Carroll also ranks second in the league in runs scored (17) - one behind teammate Collin Cowgill – and fourth in doubles (5), two shy of the league leader, freshman UK shortstop Chris Wade (7).
This marks UK’s fifth SEC weekly honor in the past two seasons and the 11th weekly honor for UK since 2006. It is Carroll’s, who hit .350 with 23 two-baggers in 2007, first SEC Player of the Week honor.
