In the basketball recruiting world, they are known as analysts, gurus, mavens (and a few names unsuitable for print in a family newspaper). They are self-appointed experts who appraise the abilities of high school prospects, then compile meticulous lists of ratings that seemingly presume to differentiate, say, the 53rd best prospect from the 54th. Because NCAA rules forbid public comment from coaches until signing day, the Herald-Leader and many other media outlets across the country come to them for consultation and, better still, a quote about Hometown U's latest recruit. As Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid famously asked, who are those guys?
