Just so you don't think Shannon Brown isn't cool in the modern sense of the word -- that the straight-talking, firm-handshaking, academically-minded Chicagoland guard is some kind of square -- he does have a tattoo emblazoned on his right bicep. Of course, it says, "Thank You Jesus," which isn't exactly the ink work popular among the really cool cats. But that's Brown, the All-American kid at the Nike All-America Camp. There is a reason half the schools in the Midwest are in full pursuit of the 6-foott-1 guard out of Maywood, Ill., and only part of it is because he is fast, sharp and skilled with the basketball. There also are the strong grades, the adult demeanor and the team-oriented personality. This is the son of a father who is a police sergeant and a mother who works at IBM. This is a superstar who favors the pass to the dunk. This is a 17-year-old who might be caught in the middle of an intense recruiting battle, but seems wonderfully unaffected. The best way to make an impact on Brown -- "just be straight up." That's what the coaching staffs at Illinois, Michigan State, Indiana, Kansas, Marquette, Louisville, Notre Dame, DePaul and Kentucky have managed to do.
