6-3 guard Ryan Appleby of Stanwood (WA) High will visit Gonzaga Thursday and Friday and Oregon Saturday and Sunday. He is a three-year starter who has started all 78 games in his career. He was one of 31 players invited to the 18 and younger trials held this weekend at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. These participants hope to be picked as the 12 finalists for the 2002 USA Basketball Men's Junior World Championship Qualifying Team that will compete July 24-28 in Venezuela. Appleby is visiting Florida the following weekend and is being looked at by North Carolina State, North Carolina, Kentucky, Stanford, Washington, Missouri, New Mexico, Texas and California. He plans to sign in the early signing period. Appleby recently played with a Washington team in Vienna, Austria, which finished 6-0 and became the first American team to win the tourney. He lost five pounds during the European trip.

Sounds like a very promising player, but boy he sure looks rail-thin! One concern was the statement that "he needs to work on his ball-handling".
