Former Kentucky football player and current graduate assistant Matt McCutchan was arrested early Sunday morning on charges of alcohol intoxication.
Police were called to a Hampton Inn in Pike County, Kentucky to deal with “a drunk man in a stairwell.”
Alcohol intoxication is a misdemeanor charge and McCutchan was released after eight hours of soberin’ up time.
Head coach Joker Phillips is aware of the situation and is reportedly in the process of addressing it. What that means is anyone’s guess.
McCutchan is the second UK coach to be arrested in the last few months. UK basketball assistant Rod Strickland was arrested in April on charges of drunk driving. He was voluntarily reassigned to an administrative position.
Why bring up Strickland’s case? Because of something we’ve hit on previously.
After the deaths of two Kentucky football players in 1998, UK officials pushed to retire the “Beer Barrel” trophy from its annual football battle with rival Tennessee. UT officials agreed.
The idea — A school should not be promoting alcohol consumption.
The rub — Kentucky bourbon-maker Maker’s Mark has since offered to give cash to a UK music program if it could use the likenesses of some Wildcat coaches on limited edition bourbon bottles.
No longer worried about appearances — apparently — Kentucky jumped at the idea. Rich Brooks was featured on a bottle of hootch last year… John Calipari was pictured on this year’s edition.
Personally, I don’t believe Calipari’s face on a whiskey bottle led McCutchan or Strickland or anyone else to drink. But I don’t believe football players carrying an old, empty beer keg would lead people to drink, either.
Having had two assistants arrested on alcohol charges since April, it will be interesting to see if UK puts the kibosh on next year’s run of commemorative Maker’s Mark bottles.
I’m guessing they won’t. And if they don’t, then one of the league’s oldest traditional trophies should be brought back out of mothballs.
Either appearances matter or they don’t.
So bring back the Beer Barrel. Only the state of Mississippi’s “Golden Egg” is better known among SEC rivalry trophies. And Southeastern Conference fans are too passionate to have just one well-known rivalry trophy.
