ORLANDO – The University of Kentucky cheerleaders continued their dominance at the Universal Cheer Association National Championships by winning their record 16th title, Sunday at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.
The championship is the squad’s fourth in the last five years and 12th out of the last 14 years.
“It was a tough spot having to perform first (in the Finals),” head coach Jomo Thompson said. “But we went out and hit our routine, setting the bar high and putting the pressure on the other 14 teams after us.”
The team earned an automatic bid to the finals of the competition by placing first in the South Regional based on a tape submitted to the UCA last fall.
The Southeastern Conference was represented by six teams in the 15-team finals. Tennessee finished second while Alabama took home fifth place. LSU came in sixth, Mississippi State was 10th and Ole Miss placed 14th.
“We’re glad to bring the trophy back to Lexington,” Thompson said. “The Bluegrass is its home and we knew we had to bring it back after placing third last year.”
The cheerleaders will arrive back in Lexington on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 5:25 p.m. at Bluegrass Airport.
Kentucky has cleaned up at the cheerleading competition, winning championships in 1985, 1987, 1988, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008.
