AD-DAWR, Iraq (Reuters) - Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) offered to negotiate with the U.S. troops who arrested him near his home town, a U.S. officer in the force that captured the former president said Monday.

"He said: 'I'm Saddam Hussein, I'm the president of Iraq (news - web sites) and I'm willing to negotiate,"' Major Brian Reed, operations officer for the first brigade of the Fourth Infantry Division, told reporters at the site where Saddam was found Saturday hiding in a hole at a hut.
"The response from soldiers was: 'President Bush (news - web sites) sends his regards'."
Saddam was found eight months after U.S.-led forces toppled his government in Baghdad.
