ATLANTA - A former Kentucky basketball coach all but guaranteed yesterday that UK will retain Tubby Smith. "Tubby Smith has absolutely no chance -- zero chance -- of being replaced," Rick Pitino said on an appearance on the ESPN radio show Mike & Mike in the Morning. "He's had a great tenure at the University of Kentucky. He represents the university in a light we all want. He has class. He makes his kids get an education." Pitino, who served as UK coach from 1989 through 1997, predicted dire consequences should Smith be dismissed or forced to resign. "Kentucky would never replace Tubby Smith at all," Pitino said. "If they did, it'd set the program back, I believe, 10 or 15 years." www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/sports/colleges/university_of_kentucky/16859905.htm

He just wants Tubby to stay around because he needs to even the score. He has lost three and counting to Tubby.

No one is irreplacable. Some are harder than others but everyone is replacable.
There are many candidates with equal or better credentials than Tubby had when hired.

Equal or better credentials when Tubby was hired is not good enough unless you think Tubby is good enough. Remember how hard it has been to get off the coaching carosel when it is so easy to get on it. The classic Alabama Syndrone applies. They had 7 coaches in 8 years IIRC. And they now have a hired gun who will drop them in a heartbeat for a better offer. I am just glad that ball is in Mitch's court and not mine.

I think Pitino knows that with the one year rule about the NBA he will not have his recruits go pro. He knows with the way he can recruit UL is going to even the score rather quickly.

You know; I really couldn't care less what Pitino says about UK, or his thoughts on Tubby's situation. The man talks only to hear himself speak.

The comparison of Alabama football and UK basketball amounts to apples and oranges. It's much easier to turn a basketball program around than it is a football program. UK pays their head coach better than any other school; they would have no problem getting one of their top choices.

You obviously think all programs are equal and that they're quality is a reflection purely of their present coach. No coach at UK had won a title before coming to UK but still we have FOUR different coaches to do just that. You seek gurantees but their are none in life. There are very few low risk/high reward situations and so this is strssful for everyone because we all but know that there will be no GREATNESS ahead with Tubby. Your point of view suggest that you would have the program no longer aspire to be the best to prevent from being the worst. What do you think happens to this program without Tubby that is so horrible that we should dream smaller dreams and live a quiet life. What evil fate did you think was in store for this program before Tubby took the reigns that makes being a one of the crowd SEC team acceptable in any way? You seek to be the voice of wisdom but then discredit yourself and the only purpose in that I can see is a backdoor attempt to attempt to reduce the importance of the fans. A"what do we know?" type deal, yet you continue to express your opinions. At which point all the opinions still have the same relative value anyway...so why is it such a big speaking point? I don't get it. Again, there are many qualified candidates, like any hire (you ever done any hiring?) the key will be finding the best fit from those qualified candidates. I assure you your boss doesn't keep you out of fear, you are retained for your value. I strongly disagree with your carosel analogy. That's just not Kentucky's mindset. I'd say we tend to ride our horses into the ground rather than giving up too quickly. Tubby, we can't forget has already post 3 consecutive 10 loss seasons. He's setting a Final Four draught record with every second that passes, and he is the only supposed "top" coach I've ever seen lose two totally diffrent teams in at all, much less in 5 years. This is not some ill-thought out, merritless, or kneejerk desire to part ways with Coach Smith. I'm sure Coach Calipari will be given all due patience in rebuilding our program and will be here 10-15 years, if the creek don't rise.
