Kickass computer programs that you've used or written: CosmoSaver www.cosmosaver.com/ and EarthBrowser www.earthbrowser.com/ both from Lunar Software, Inc. These screensavers and EB is a standalone executable too, utilize the internet data structures to update Earth views (clouds and day/night lines for both, earthquakes, volcanoes, weather for EB). Makes for a quick info check before heading off to Katmandu or wherever.

pro Fit www.quansoft.com/ from QuantumSoft. This program is my favorite for fitting equations to data. The unique aspect of pro Fit is the user's ability to interact with the fitting process by dragging the equation/curve to visually fit the data. Great way to overcome false minimums.

NetNewsWire (Lite or Pro) ranchero.com/RSS : XML agent. If you don't know what this is, you will. Think HTML about 20 years ago compressed to 5 you get XML. RSS lets you tell your site users what's changed since last visit or X time when they wanna know. Check out the disturbing searches submitted to search engines category! Cool beans.

X11 is the defacto standard for graphics in the linux world. The open source project for X11 is XFree86. This week Apple released it's version of X11 for MacOS X and compared to the previous versions of X11 running on my home and lab G4s, this one is a real screamer. Sorry on being so Mac-centered with this post; it's just that my job has been greatly simplified with this release by Apple.
