University of Kentucky golfer John Holmes( ;D) was named to the Softspikes All-Freshman Team on Thursday, May 30 by The Golf Coaches Association of America. The honor is given annually to the top five freshmen in the nation.
Holmes, a Campbellsville, Ky., native, finished his freshman campaign as the nation's 36th-ranked golfer and UK's most consistent performer. In 2002, Holmes earned back-to-back medalist honors in the Johnny Owens Invitational and the Marshall Invitational. He received an individual bid to the 2002 NCAA Central Regional Tournament and was the first Wildcat to be named to the All-Southeastern Conference first team in over a decade.
"This is a great honor for John and he is certainly deserving of it," Coach Brian Craig said. "John has played exceptionally throughout this season and is on his way to being among the very best collegiate golfers."

Congratulations to John. That's quite an accomplishment. Maybe he'll be the best in the NCAA in a couple of years.
