Dennis Johnson says there is no way he can know how demanding his first year in the National Football League will be. He just knows it will be long. The Arizona Cardinals made Johnson, an All-Southeastern Conference defensive end at Kentucky, their third round pick and signed him to a three-year deal earlier this summer. It was not a long, drawn-out negotiation for two reasons -- Johnson wanted to be in training camp on time and the Cardinals offered him a better deal than the player picked in his spot in the 2001 NFL Draft. He signed the contract, bought a new car, put away some money for his infant son and took a vacation. Now he knows it is time to get ready for the longest football season he's ever endured.
