University of Kentucky football coach Guy Morriss said he told school President Lee Todd in the spring that he preferred an athletic director with a football background. Mitch Barnhart, introduced yesterday as UK's AD, fits the description. ''He has a lot of ideas, and I'm looking forward to hearing them,'' Morriss said. ''We need all the manpower and brainpower we can muster to get this thing going.'' Barnhart knows Southeastern Conference football after spending 12 years at Tennessee. As Oregon State's AD he hired former National Football League coach Dennis Erickson, who led the Beavers to their first Pacific-10 Conference championship in nearly 40 years and a Bowl Championship Series berth in the Fiesta Bowl.
