LEXINGTON, Ky. -- During an Aug. 17 hearing in Chicago, the University of Kentucky will get to make its case against the one-year football bowl ban dealt it by the NCAA infractions committee in January, and university President Lee Todd said he plans to come out fighting. UK compliance director Sandy Bell announced the date yesterday during a meeting of the UK Athletics Association Board. ''I didn't want to take a big entourage (before the appeals committee),'' Todd said, ''but I decided if we're going to fight it, we might as well fight it all the way.'' As a result, UK has retained The Compliance Group, a nationally recognized legal firm for institutions making appeals to the NCAA. Among those working directly with UK are Chuck Smrt, a former NCAA enforcement official, and David Swank, a law professor at the University of Oklahoma and a former chair of the NCAA Committee on Infractions. At stake for UK not only is its bowl eligibility for next season, but an estimated $1.5 million in shared bowl revenue from the Southeastern Conference that it would be forced to forfeit if ineligible for the postseason.
