Ireland's ban on smoking in pubs and restaurants could have added health benefits if research in the United States is anything to go by. Nearly two years before the emerald isle became the first country to outlaw smoking in public places, the city of Helena in Montana passed similar legislation and saw a sharp drop in heart attacks. Opponents subsequently had the U.S. law overturned but in the six months it was enforced, hospital admissions for heart attack fell by 40 percent in the city. "The observations...suggests that smoke-free laws not only protect people from the long-term dangers of second-hand smoke but also that they may be associated with a rapid decrease in heart attacks," said Professor Stanton Glantz of the University of California, San Francisco. Well duuuu, I bet the gov spend $142 million to come up with that no brainer. However, murders went up by 568% over the same period. They are forming a task force going to study why murders went up.

Stop the stupid gun laws! Criminals don't follow the letter 'law' anyway. Let nearly every resident harbor a piece and protect thyself. They say crime runs rampant (sp) in poverty areas. We'll...I live in a 'poverty' area and yet see no major crime. Why? I'll tell ya. We have little crime because EVERYBODY owns a firearm. You don't break in on the elderly here because grandpa will quickly pull out his 12 guage and blow you to kingdom come. No one will car jack granny here. She would simply pull a 9mm from her purse and empty the clip.

Wow Spam, did not mean to touch on the gun issue. Hope that did not upset you there bro. See, the murder rate went up because the cigs were taken away from the smokers. Most of the smokers that went on the killing sprees did it in other ways, not guns you see. They were nice about it. Ran over some with cars, hatchet job on some, others were simply beaten to death with a baseball bat. Some thrown off tall buildings, others through windows, mass mutilation instead of mass gunmen. Hope that make you feel a bit better. Glad they decided to give the cigs back.
