Question: Are militant groups subject to the Geneva Convention? Also, since many captured by the US are members of these groups, are they actually considered POW's? NO, they are not IMO at all ! They do not conduct themselves in the manners of what is considered acceptable military conduct, many times disguising themselves as civilians (not allowed), and many other things, especially treating American captives as POW's and taking care of them and treating them the way they should be treated under the Geneva Convention, yet everybody gets mad at the USA ! Why is that ? Dont get me wrong, I dont like how America has done in some of these cases, still, we havent stooped anywhere close to the levels these infidels have !

Whether these militant groups recognize the Geneva Convention or not shouldn't matter. We are a more civilized people, and should behave ourselves as such. It's not a matter of following the Geneva Convention IMO. It is a matter of being the people that we claim to be. If everyone else is wrong, we still have the obligation to stand for right, and not join them in the wrong by being led down the road that they have chosen.

I agree BC, just because they act like heathern does not mean we should. Thats why I say, I still dont like the way we have treated some of their prisoners. What Im upset with though, is the mass amount of people that are griping more about what a few soldiers did to their prisoners, than what they did to the American they beheaded. All it is , is an attempt at playing politics in the upcoming election, and I think thats disgraceful. We are prosecuting the soldiers that did those things, as well we should. But lets forget about politics and remember, we are fighting an enemy that uses little children, churches to hide in, dressing as civilians, and any number of other things to gain advantage and sneak attacks on us, all of which are not allowed under the Geneva Convention war engagement conduct. Now, I do not agree with treating any prisoner wrongly, but, if we are fighting an enemy that continues to engage in these type of activities, then we should not be limited by the rules of conduct either when it comes to securing and protecting the lives of Americans.

One day prior to the murder of Nick Berg, Senator James Inhofe took Kennedy and Kerry to task for their political rhetoric, reminding them that humiliating terrorists is hardly comparable to prisoner treatment by Saddam Hussein, the "Butcher of Baghdad." "I would guess that these prisoners wake up every morning thanking Allah that Saddam Hussein is not in charge," said Sen. Inhofe. "When he was in charge they would take electric drills and drill holes through hands, they would cut their tongues out, they would cut their ears off. We've seen accounts of lowering their bodies into vats of acid... lining up 312 little kids under 12 years old and executing them ,"Do you suppose there is a single prisoner being held by any of the countries in the President's listening audience in the Middle East who wouldn't eagerly switch places with a detainee in the custody of the American military? None of this makes what they did right, I for one still say it was wrong. But please remember these guys are upset at seeing American losses and some of the things happenning to fellow soldiers by these people. Some lashed out, and did things that were wrong, but dont let the few bad apples ruin the hundreds of thousands of good the other soldiers are doing and trying to accomplish !

Just remember - soldiers, airmen, sailors, and marines - are human beings also!!
It is very hard to keep one's senses - when your buddies are tortured, mutilated, dragged thru the streets, and ambushed!! Yes - they are American fighting men and women - and held to a much higher standard than the Armed Forces of other Nations! However - Iraq is a situation unlike ANY we have ever been involved in before - there is no stress relief available. No where to turn the "war off" for a 8 hour period - to "get away" for just a little while!!! It is constant stress!!
I do not condone the actions of the military personnel involved - but - I understand the stress of the situation and the stress build-up!!! These are our friends and families sons and daughters - not criminals!!!!!!! God Bless our fighting men and women!!!
